New Produce

In the fridge today we have a mixture of unusual Radish; The first of which is the Watermelon Radish, the outer appearance of this product resembles a Turnip, once sliced a beautiful white & red flesh. The taste is very mild with a sweet taste with a hint of watermelon. The second is the Green Meat (flesh) Radish, which is a unique radish from northern China. English Tomatoes

The English tomato season is now in full swing with fantastic quality tomatoes readily available, along side our standard English Tomatoes we also have a great selection of English Heritage/Heirloom Tomatoes. The varieties that we have today are: Ox Heart – This is a large old fashioned tomato that is renowned for being very fragrant and sweet. Milano Brown – About the size of a regular tomato with a chocolate brown colour. Green Zebra – So called because of its characteristic dark green and yellow stripes,  the Green Zebra is more tart (described by some as spicy and zingy) than regular tomatoes.  ...

St George’s Day

As today is St George’s Day (23rd April 2014) it seems most fitting that we highlight some of the fantastic English produce that we have in our fridges today. Asparagus – we have some good English Asparagus available at the moment, from two different growers, one crop are coming in with quite thick spears the others are much finer, we also have purple asparagus available. Rainbow Chard –  available in bunches rainbow chard is a mix of other colored varieties that is often mistaken for a variety unto itself. Potatoes – We have some great varieties of English potato in stock at the moment including King Edwards & Maris Piper the price of Jersey Royal and Cornish New is coming down as availability becomes more widespread. Strawberries – although it is still very early we have had a steady supply of British Strawberries & have also seen some Green Strawberries. Rhubarb – We are no longer holding the forced rhubarb but have a great supply of the field grown rhubarb with rich colour and thick stems. Purple Sprouting – available in bunches this is one of the most popular lines at the moment. Heritage Tomato – These have been available from an English grower for the last week or so, with a great selection of many interesting tomato varieties....

Getting their feet muddy

Last week Matt Richards our in house expert took a team from a local kitchen down to Canara Farm to show them how the project to grow our own specialist range of produce was progressing. After a brief stomp through the mud the chefs were able to see the frames for the three custom built growing tunnels and the plant beds and the first signs of life from our first Heritage tomato crop.    ...
