English Apple Season

English Apple Season

English Apples Now in Season As the leaves start to change colour and Autumn begins we pleased to see the English Apple season well and truly underway, Fresh Plaza are predicting this to be the biggest apple crop in 20 years with over 160,000 tons expected to be picked. The cool August should also result in some particularly vibrant colours. We have already had some fantastic Discovery apples in the fridges and now we are seeing more varieties arrive. The varieties available now are: Cox – A medium sized red/orange apple, The cox is a classic English apple & regarded by many as the finest of all desert apples (http://www.orangepippin.com/apples/coxs-orange-pippin). Gala – A small to medium red apple, commonly available in supermarkets but usually grown in New Zealand. Winsor – A sweet crisp dessert apple also known as Alkene. Worcester – A sweet flavoured dessert apple with a hint of strawberry. Russet – The Egremont Russet dates back to the Victorian era, the Russet has a very unique appearance – the skin is covered with “Russet” giving it the texture of fine sand paper, the taste is a fine balance of sharp and sweet. We also have English Bramley Apples available for most of the year perfect for pies and apple sauce. We would love to see how local chefs are using these fantastic seasonal apples so if you any pictures of your dishes or apple recipes that you wish to share please post them below or share them with us on Twitter. Canara Farm Winter Planting

Canara Farm Winter Planting

Today officially marks the beginning of Autumn therefore we can expect to see some changes in the crops available from Canara Farm, this week will see the final planting of Lizard Leaves, so we should have a crop available for another week or so. As one crop ends we have started our plans for crop plans for 2016, Pete has had a few trial crops and has selected a few that should grow well at Mylor and should result in a good yield. Pete has just put the finishing touches to several raised beds, the raised bed have several advantages from just planting straight into the soil, such as improved drainage which could become a problem if we have heavy rains, the beds should also act as a barrier for pests such as slugs and snails. While we are still finalizing exactly what we will be growing at the moment we are hoping to have the following products available through 2016: Salad Blue Potatoes – deep colour and highly versatile suitable for boiling, roasting or mashing Eschallot Grise – popular in French cuisine due to it’s intense flavour Carcassonne Wight Garlic with scapes – a good sized bulb with pink tint Mara Des Bois Strawberries – a deep red strawberry with a strong aroma Snow White Strawberries – a beautiful white strawberry with red pips Please keep an eye on the website and follow us on Twitter to stay up to date with all the latest news from Canara Farm and the best in local and seasonal produce. We love seeing what all the talented local chefs are creating...
