Hi and welcome to our fresh produce range. We work closely with our farmers and growers to source as much as we can locally. In this regular blog series we take a closer look at our growers and the fantastic people who make it all possible. Today we are delighted to highlight Terawhiti Farm and introduce Martin Berryman.
“ I love every aspect of growing fruit and vegetables from planting, to cutting and packing … even eating it! If I had to choose, my favourite meal would have to be a roast dinner with plenty of my own fresh vegetables followed by my sweet strawberries for dessert. “
Terawhiti Farm is a traditional family run farm situated in the heart of the beautiful South Hams countryside and on the edge of the charming village of South Milton. The small but diverse farm has been in the Berryman family for well over a century.
“ Growing cauliflowers is my favourite type of produce to grow, because that is how the farm started three generations ago. I taught my wife and children how to cut cauliflower during lockdown. “
The winter months yield vegetables including cauliflower, kales, cabbages, sprouts, celeriac, chard and pumpkins. In the summer Terawhiti Farm concentrate on strawberries and broccoli. All this interspersed with the fattening of their hundred strong beef herd.
“ I largely use cow dung as a fertilizer because this reduces the artificial nitrogen required and this enhances the flavour of our produce. I would have liked to have branched out and grown a wider range of produce from the outset. I like working with WestCountry because they are always keen for me to grow new produce and have helped me to grow my business.“
At the beginning of October 2020 Terawhiti Farm hosted their popular Pumpkin Patch event for the 3rd year running. Over 5000 pumpkin plants were grown and the public were invited to visit and harvest their own local pumpkin straight from the Pumpkin Patch.
