OlFactory - Speciality Cornish Coffee Roasters

Introducing OlFactory Coffee Roasters.

Coffee obsession lead to Angel Parushev to abandon his background in law and set up OlFactory in 2013. Based in the Old Brewery Yard on the outskirts of Penryn, Cornwall, with the simple ethos of wanting to make good coffee. The team are committed to producing the finest quality seasonal coffee. By experimenting, testing, sampling and flavour profiling Angel and his dedicated team ensure that the very best flavour characteristics are extracted from each bean.

Angel is so dedicated to his craft that he had a Diedrich roaster hand built in America to his own specifications. This unique machine is capable of roasting twelve kilos of beans at a time. The flavour produced is dependent on many elements including the regions weather, the density of the bean and the variety available.

OlFactory place an enormous emphasis on ethically sourcing their beans and developing sustainable working relationships with farmers and green bean brokers. Meaning that every bean that is roasted by them has made a positive contribution towards a better future for all involved in the production chain.

Following 6 months of experimentation and research the OlFactory micro-roastery officially roasted their first beans on the 21st of April 2014. Since then the roastery has become a must visit destination for coffee lovers in Cornwall. OlFactory coffee is also the brew of choice in a variety of cafes and restaurants through out the county.

History of Coffee.

Believe it or not is very complicated. Legend writes that the first ‘discovery’ of the coffee bean was made by an Ethiopian herdsman named Kaldi. He observed his goat chewing on the red berries of a bush and the goats became more energetic (becoming known as the dancing or jumping goats). Kaldi chewed on the fruits himself and on feeling the exhilaration that the goats were feeling it prompted him to take the berries to an Islamic monk who disapproving of the beans, threw them into the fire which then gave off an enticing aroma. The beans were raked from the embers, ground and dissolved in hot water- creating the world’s first cup.

However, recent botanical evidence suggests that the history of the coffee bean began on the plateaus of central Ethiopia and were somehow brought to Yemen where it was cultivated from the 6th century. When the first coffee house Kiva Han opened in Dhaka in 1475, the drink became more of a passion rather than just a stimulant. It wasn’t until the 17th century that it was introduced to the West by Italian traders and in 1651, the first coffee house opened in England. The first ‘instant’ was invented by Satori Kato, a Japanese- American chemist in 1901. Decaffeinated coffee under the brand name of ‘Sanka’ being was developed by researchers using a batch of ruined beans from German importer Ludwig Roselius in 1903.

There is a world record for moving coffee beans with chop sticks!

Coffee in space & a coffee powered Car.

Over 500 billion cups of coffee are served annually worldwide making it the most popular drink on the planet, topping agricultural exports for 12 countries in 2004. Many Guinness World Records have been set for coffee including; the most coffee beans moved with chopsticks in 1 minute which was one by Cynthia Nojicic who moved 38 beans and the largest cup of coffee which contained 13,200 litres in London. Known as the ‘Car-puccino’, a car fuelled by the equivalent of 11,000 espressos travelled 250 miles from London to Manchester in 2010 and in 2014, the International Space Station got its first espresso machine in space meaning the astronauts finally get their caffeine hit whilst orbiting the planet.

Benefits of drinking Coffee.

Research has been very contradictory as to the health benefits of coffee with results being similarly conflicting with the potential harmful effects of consumption. As one of the most popular drinks however, more has been written regarding the benefits of drinking coffee including:

* The caffeine boost- the most obvious reason is that tasty boost of energy that comes in all kinds of varieties.

*The smell could make you less stressed- it has been clinically proven to reduce stress and fight depression.

*Makes an excelling post dining treat- as it aids with digestion.

*Great for your liver (especially if you drink alcohol).
